Waking up with a stiff and sore neck is not a great way to start your day. It keeps you from sleeping well, which in turn compromises your performance at work. Persistent pain can make you cranky and you might turn to strong painkillers to find relief, which can leave you feeling even worse than before. To banish your neck pain for good, you first need to understand what is causing it before you can decide on the best treatment plan and pain relief to pursue.
It’s important to note that if your neck pain is accompanied by a loss of balance or coordination, weight loss, fever, chills, numbness and or tingling, it’s best to seek immediate medical attention.
Common causes of neck pain
Poor sleeping position – if you’ve slept in a different bed or even in a different position to your usual one, you could overextend your neck and cause neck pain.
Sports injury – Any sudden or unusual neck movement can cause neck pain. This could be caused by collisions in contact sports, or tripping and falling while running or riding. It can also occur during physical activity that requires repetitive movements like swimming or dancing.
Poor posture – If your job involves you tilting your heads for prolonged periods of time you can put a strain on the muscles, ligaments and tendons in and around your neck and shoulders. Staring at a computer screen all day or spending many hours reading at a desk can also cause neck pain.
Delayed injury – many people aren’t aware that even a low impact collision can cause whiplash, and that its symptoms may be masked due to shock. If you’ve been involved in even a minor car accident and are only now dealing with neck pain, whiplash could be the likely culprit.
If you’ve experienced any of the above, and are experiencing mild to moderate neck pain, the most commonly prescribed treatment involves using heat or cold to provide relief. Alternating between hot and cold compression has an anti-inflammatory effect, as does a light massage.
We suggest using Zen Sports Spray, as the potential cause of neck pain is generally from short bursts of action and can be focused on muscle strains. Zen Sports Spray has a high level of arnica to support internal and external bruising, and the warming sensation of camphor supports pain relief.
